Soil Moisture Monitoring

Know how wet the catchment is before the rain arrives. Authorised Sentek dealer.

Early read on catchment conditions

How much rain turns into runoff depends on how wet the ground already is. Soil moisture probes installed at flood warning stations give council an early read on catchment conditions, from the surface down to 1.2 m. As an authorised Sentek dealer, we supply, install and support Sentek probes directly.

A flood warning station already has power, a logger and telemetry, so adding soil moisture costs far less than a stand-alone site. Readings sit next to the station’s rainfall and river level, which makes it easy to see how the catchment is responding. Sealed probes can’t be repaired, so we check every channel at each service and plan replacements before a wet season.

Watching the catchment wet up

Real data from a station probe, summer 2020: the surface wets and dries with each storm, while deeper soil only fills after sustained rain.

Project snapshot

Probe replacement at a creek-side flood station, South East Queensland (2023)

During a water quality network assessment we found this station’s soil moisture probe had failed: no communication, and as a sealed unit it couldn’t be repaired. We installed a new 1.2 m drill & drop probe in fresh ground beside the station, ran the cable in conduit to the pit and wired it into the new logger. It now reports moisture, salinity and temperature at 10 cm intervals, alongside the station’s river level and rainfall.
